World
Jesus Christ, the one who is the source of our life, told his disciples that he did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45) Therefore, we, the church, his followers, must have the same attitude. At Discovery Church we want to be a community that serves and gives it's life for others.
In order to have the greatest impact, through prayerful discernment, we have chosen three organizations to work with and support as we aim to serve the world in the name of Jesus. The organizations all have low administrative costs, are small enough that we can build a relationship with, and do what they do because of Jesus Christ. They are: Clayton Area Ministries, the Me Fine Foundation, and the Staff of Hope.
Clayton Area Ministries
Clayton Area Ministries, also known as CAM, is a local ministry that offers food and financial assistance to the needy. They collect non-perishable food items on an ongoing basis, in addition to organizing special fundraising events that benefit CAM, such as the SuperBowl of Caring and others. Our Youth Group has been particularly active in supporting CAM's mission by stocking shelves and the like.
Me Fine Foundation
With The Me Fine Foundation, we share a heart for children.
The mission of the Me Fine Foundation is to voluntarily provide necessary resources and financial assistance to parents and caregivers with children being treated at Duke and UNC Children's Hospitals regardless of race, diagnosis, economic status or religion in memory of Folden Lee, IV. This year our Angel Tree gifts went to families identified by Me Fine.
Staff of Hope
Staff of Hope helps people in East Africa lift themselves from poverty by bringing clean water, education and health care. By creating partnerships in underdeveloped communities, we aim to enable long term sustainable change. Staff of Hope was started in 2001 by a group of seminary students in response to a severe drought in East Africa. This disaster forced the displacement of one of their classmates families. Failing to find another organization that was able to assist with long term solutions in the Southern Kenya area, this small group formed Staff of Hope. Since that time the organization has grown guided by a vision of helping people lift themselves from poverty with sustainable long term solutions and becoming resilient to events like drought, famine and economic shock.
In addition to these, Discovery Church also pursues other projects at certain times of the year, such as back-to-school backpacks and Angel Tree gifts to support local families in need.
