Our Purpose
Building Families in Christ
We have a heart for families. Families today face serious challenges. There are so many forces that pull families apart. These forces range from broken marriages to busy schedules to just plain distance. We at Discovery Church want to help families. Our mission in fact is to “build families in Christ.” This mission shapes our life together. It shapes our Worship. It guides how we approach the Word of God. It directs our mission to the World. You will see all the programs on this site divided between these three areas. We aim to pursuit these three areas in ways that keep families together so that they may be built up and strengthened.
Worship
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. Psalm 22:27
We begin worship as one big family, adults and kids together. After singing and praying together, the children go to an awesome learning time designed just for them.
Like most churches we follow Christ’s command and celebrate the Lord’s Supper regularly (once a month), unlike others, we do so early in the service so that the kids can celebrate it with their parents before they leave for their classes.
Word
Let the Word of Christ dwell in your richly Col 3:16 (NRSV)
God reveals himself in the Bible as our true heavenly Father, who has given his Son for the sake of the world. Therefore, we find the foundation of all wisdom and love in the Bible. We envision families being united around the Word, drawn together and built up.
We want parents to catch this vision. We want to equip fathers and mothers so that they will feel confident in helping their children to understand the faith and to walk in it. It has been said that the family that prays together stays together.
We put great energy and imagination into how we teach Scripture on Sunday mornings. Our heart’s cry is that both children and adults would anxiously wait for Sunday morning to come as they hunger for the Word.
We offer The Marriage Course at least once a year to bring the wisdom of the Bible to couples who want a stronger marriage. A stronger marriage means a stronger family.
We are glad to be hosting a Community Bible Study that meets here on Wednesday nights. We are also excited about other Bible study opportunities, such as the one on Sunday morning.
World
"Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." John 20:21
Just as the Father gave his Son for the world, so God’s purpose for our families is to be sources of love, hope, and good for the world. One mission activity that we have done for several years has been Operation Sharehouse, where young and old are side by side as we package food that goes to alleviate hunger around the world.
